IRON HORSE BICYCLE CLASSIC

The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic (IHBC) is a 3-day cycling festival, which includes a 47-mile bike race and tour over two 10,000’ passes from Durango to Silverton. The tradition began in 1971 when Tom Mayer challenged his brother Jim to see if he could ride the route faster than the train. Today the Iron Horse includes mountain bike and gravel events as well as numerous other cycling festivities around town. In 2022, Durango Mesa Park hosted the mountain bike races to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the IHBC.

SINGLE SPEED CYCLOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Durango Mesa Park was the site of the 2022 Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships (SSCX) and what a sight it was. According to Sarah Strum in The Radavist, “SSCX is both an inclusive experience of crazy while still being competitive and it helps us remember the importance of creativity and playfulness in what can often be a very serious sport.” If you were there in 2022, well, you know.

STATE MOUNTAIN BIKING CHAMPIONSHIP

Working in partnership with Colorado High School Cycling League, which is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, Durango Mesa Park created a Durango mountain bike course for regional races and the 2018 and 2019 state mountain biking championships. High school athletes from throughout the state participated, including those from Animas and Durango high schools. The Durango events provided an economic boost to the city. Fort Lewis College held weekend campus tours and information sessions, plus hosted the League’s end-of-season dinner enjoyed by over 1,000 athletes and their families. In the future, Durango Mesa Park will serve as a premier athletic venue for world-class training and competition.

ANNUAL MELTDOWN ON THE MESA

From 2014-19, Durango Mesa Park hosted Meltdown on the Mesa, a local grassroots Durango music event and fundraiser. This daylong festival hints at the positive impact these types of events can have on the community and the economy.
